Chapter Sixteen

Dark thoughts, dark words. Andrea didn’t mean to interfere with the grieving Emmy needed to do, but she was getting afraid. Days turned into weeks, and Emmy hadn’t called Brad yet. She knew from Julia that Shelby Grace and the others had been talking to him about the project. Everyone was trying to give Emmy space.

Andrea feared that she’d be losing her in that space.

Emmy had started writing, snippets that turned up all over the house.

For all the controversy that had always surrounded her, because misguided parents thought Emmy was turning their kids gay by the power of her performance, Emmy had always been optimistic, uplifting. Long before Andrea could find her footing again, Emmy had turned scandal and notoriety into opportunity, for her, for her fans, some of which were struggling with a hostile family.

Andrea didn’t mind supporting her this time, though she was beginning to doubt that her support could make a difference.

Emmy writing lyrics was a good thing, except she didn’t seem to want to do anything with them. The content reflected emotions and a darkness beyond grief.

She still slept a lot during the day.

Andrea wanted to be patient, but her fears were about to outrun that patience.

When she woke up once more to find the bed empty, she put on a robe and joined Emmy in the living room. Usually, she would be listening to their older songs or watching the footage. Again. And again.

“Couldn’t sleep?” she asked softly. Of course, given that Emmy slept in every day and went to bed early, it wasn’t such a surprise.

“I’m trying to figure this out,” Emmy responded. “If there’s a lesson in it, I can’t see it.”

Andrea pulled her legs up under her as they watched together. This was familiar too.

“Maybe sometimes there isn’t one. Maybe we’re just supposed to move on somehow.” Emmy had always sympathized and acknowledged everything Andrea had to give up in order to be with her. But no one had died. “Emmy, I love you. I want you to take the time you need, for everything, but I’m worried about you.” Her breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t meant to be quite so direct, but it was out in the open now. She couldn’t take those words back.

“I don’t get it. I’ve been writing. You were all worried I wasn’t doing anything, now that I am, it’s no good either?”

Emmy sounded hurt. It was the last thing Andrea had intended.

“No, that’s not what I meant. I understand…It’s been a tough time for everyone, and I know you want to make the right choices…”

“I’m not sure you understand at all,” Emmy said coolly. She turned off the TV, got off the couch and went upstairs, leaving Andrea dumbfounded and more distraught than ever.

* * * *

The last thing she had expected—or needed—was Carter Forbes knocking on her door the next morning. Emmy was still in bed. They hadn’t exchanged more than a few words since last night. Andrea sat in the kitchen with a coffee, contemplating how early in the day was too early to drink when the doorbell rang.
